Name: Helen Wilson
Helen studied flute at Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music graduating with a Distinction in her Masters degree and an International Artist Diploma. She was kindly granted a Musicians Benevolant Fund Postgraduate Award, Countess of Munster Postgraduate Award and an ABRSM scholarship to help fund her studies.
Helen's successes include winning the Harriet Cohen Award, RNCM Gold Medal Award, RNCM Concerto Competition, RNCM Solo Woodwind Competition and the British Flute Society Performance Plus Competition. Shehas been a Park Lane Group Young Artist, Concordia Artist, was a finalist in the Royal Over-Seas League Competitionand in 2006 was a woodwind finalist in BBC Young Musician of the Year. As a concerto soloist Helen has recorded Linda Verrier's "Fleeting" with the BBC Philharmonic and performed Ibert Flute Concerto with the Manchester Camerata. Helen works regularly as a freelance orchestral musician and has played with orchestras such as BBC Philharmonic, Orchestra of the Opera North, Hallé, John Wilson Orchestra, Ensemble Deva, Welsh Session Orchestra, Sinfonia Cymru and is a listed extra for the Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Royal Ballet Sinfonia. Helen was a participant on the LSO St Luke Woodwind Academy and played with training orchestras including the European Union Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of GB.
In 2010 Helen founded the flute trio "Tempest", winners of the Royal Overseas League Competition and 2nd prize winners of the International Kuhlau Flute Competition. The trio were selected as Park Lane Artists in 2012 and the Manchester Midday Concert Series. Together they have performed in venues across the UK including the Wigmore Hall and internationally including tours round Switzerland, Germany and a performance in Ceasers Palace Las Vegas!
Helen is also a keen teacher, arranger and jazz player and is currently a flute teacher at Manchester University. She held the flute chair of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra 2008-2013, has played with F-IRE Collective and her works and arrangements have been played at venues including Queen Elizabeth Hall and Ceaser's Palace, Las Vegas.
